Big Bear is so lucky to have the Hall family among us. Ryan, who placed 10th in the Olympic marathon and holds the fastest time for an American-born runner, grew up running and training in the streets and hills of Big Bear.
The Hall family is very close. Mickey, Ryan's dad, was his coach throughout junior high and high school. He is a role model for Ryan and for all of Big Bear, and he will be sharing some of his wisdom and inspiration with us on Friday night.
So after you register, before you head out to dinner, stick around for Mickey's presentation at 5:00pm at the Snow Summit Expo venue. You'll be glad you did!

Online registration has been extended to 11:59pm on the night of Thursday, September 4th.
On-site registration is also available for all events. You can register at the sports expo on Friday. Or, if you're really in a rush, you can register before your race on Saturday morning, although this is only recommended if you are absolutely unavailable to register on Friday!
So the show is over, the race is all packed up, and you're still not tired? Wow. Way to go! Well, you won't have to try hard to find entertainment in Big Bear. There's going to be a bustle around town after the race, and lots of story-telling and good times.
If you can find an open seat, there's always a party and live music at B's Backyard BBQ. Their lakeside location is a great spot to socialize and soak in the beauty of a Big Bear sunset.
Or, you can climb on board with the Big Bear Pirate Ship, which sails a loop from Holloway's Marina to Lagonita Lodge and to the party at B's BBQ. You can board their Cocktail Cruise at any location on the rounds, but the only set departure time is from Holloway's Marina at 6:00p.m.
Another fun spot for food and spirits is Big Bear Mountain Brewery. If you run the full marathon, you'll pass them on the right just before mile one. They brew fresh beer on premises, and it's the best around!
El Jacalito, a locals' favorite in the heart of the Village, and Hacienda Grill, near Snow Summit, both host lively atmospheres and great Mexican food.
Peppercorn Grille is a casual classy restaurant with an intimate setting. They're located next to the start/finish line in the village and have reliably good steak, fish and salads, amongst other choices.
Bowling Barn is where it's at if you've brought the family. With glow bowling, a sports bar and 16 lanes, you can't go wrong.

Key Locations, Starting Lines, Finish Lines
The Big Picture
There are three main race locations, Snow Summit Mountain Resort, the Big Bear Village, and the Division Dr. start line. The Expo is at Snow Summit on Friday. Then on Saturday, all athletes will go park at Snow Summit and shuttle to their start lines. ½ Marathoners will go to Division Dr. The rest go to the Village and start there. ALL races finish in the Village.
Because everyone finishes there, the Village is a great place to be on race day. If you haven't been to Big Bear before, you especially will find the experience unique and entertaining. Family, friends and spectators will enjoy the cozy restaurants, shopping and personality, not to mention the post-race concert that starts at noon.
Spectators are encouraged to also park in the Snow Summit lot and take the shuttles that will be making rounds all day on Saturday. This way everyone can hang out in the Village as runners finish without a traffic jam or safety hazard. The Village will be mostly restricted to traffic throughout the race, so it will be highly inconvient to try to bring your vehicle there.
Big Bear Village
The Hwy 18 Business District lovingly known as the "Big Bear Village" is located at the intersection of Village Dr and Pine Knot Ave. Google Map it!
This location will serve as:
- Full Marathon, Bike Tour, 5K & Kids' Run start line
- Finish line for ALL courses
- Site of the Expo on Saturday
- Site of the Awards Ceremony and Concert
- A great place to hang out, shop, watch finishers come in, and more!
The Village will be served by shuttle from the parking areas at Snow Summit Resort. Parking here is extremely limited, and likely to lead to some unhappy glares from locals if you block their driveways. All athletes shoudl park at the Snow Summit parking lots and take our convenient shuttles. More parking details »
Division Dr.
The ½ Marathon start line is on North Shore Dr. / Hwy 38 intersection with Division Dr.
THERE IS NO PARKING AT THIS STARTING AREA. Not some parking. Not a tiny bit of parking. NO parking. It would be an absolute mess, so please park at the main parking lots and take the shuttles. More parking details »
Race-day Packing and Planning
updated thursday, august 28, 2008
The most important thing we can emphasize is that you should park in the parking lot at Snow Summit and take the shuttles to your start area, then rely on the shuttles to get back to your car after you finish.
Morning Temperatures: Early a.m. temps in Big Bear are chilly, in the 40-50 degree range. Bike tour riders should wear warm clothing, perhaps a wind breaker, and gloves. Runners should plan to have an insulating top if you find these temps uncomfortable. Early aid stations will collect any clothing you leave with them for donation to a local charity. Daytime temperatures in the mountains rise to 60-80 degrees (once the sun rises, things heat up quickly), so you most likely will only need warm clothing in the morning.
-
6:30 a.m. start from Big Bear Village
Park at the athlete parking lot and take shuttles to the Big Bear Village.
-
7:30 a.m. Start from Division Dr. start line
Park at the athlete parking lot and take shuttles to the start line. Shuttles start around 6:00a.m. (earlier if enough athletes to fill a bus are ready to go). Only bring running essentials to the start area. There will be water and restrooms (portable toilets) there, but little else (and NO PARKING).

Park at the Snow Summit parking lot and take the shuttle to the Village. Bring personal items (and items for your athlete) in a backpack. There are ample food vendors, bathrooms and of course, entertainment at the Big Bear Village to spend a fun day there.
If you’re going to be out on the course, take a look at the driving directions tab and familiarize yourself with the road closures and accessible routes. Remember that parking at the Big Bear Village will be challenging. Listen to FM 93.3 KBHR for traffic updates and parking information on race day.

Driving
Google map of Big Bear which will provide you with nice directions from wherever you're coming from.
Driving for athletes and participants
If you haven’t been to Big Bear before, it is not a large place. The whole valley measures not much over 10 miles in length, which means the marathon course will loop around and cross the main throughfares several times. On race day, it will be best to park in the participant's parking lot at Snow Summit and take the shuttles provided by race organizers. This will help make sure you arrive where you need to be on time and aren’t stuck in a line of cars in some corner of town. See the parking and shuttle details below.
If you can, it is also a good idea to stay in a hotel, motel or cabin within walking distance of your start line or the parking area (so you can get on the shuttles). The lodging providers listed on the left of this page or listed in the local info and lodging section all meet those necessities and can give you detailed instructions on how to get to the start lines from their location.
Information for local driving on race day
- Hwy 18 / Big Bear Blvd. between Paine Road and the Dam will be closed to westbound traffic from 5:30am to around 9:30am. Limited eastbound traffic will be allowed with significant delays. Take alternate routes.
- North Shore Drive will remain open to westbound traffic during the race, and progressively re-open to eastbound traffic as the last runners move along the course.
- Big Bear Blvd. between Knight Ave. and Pine Knot Ave. will allow one traffic lane in each direction until all runners are clear.
- Expect some delays on Big Bear Blvd. at Summit Blvd. and Division Dr. as runners cross.
- Traffic will be back to normal early Saturday afternoon.
Parking
The best parking strategy is to park your car at your hotel, motel or cabin and walk to the start area or shuttle pickup at the main parking lot. If that is not possible, there is ample parking at Snow Summit Mountain Resort. Google Map it! Parking will open as early as 4:00a.m. on race day.
Parking for athletes near the Village is extremely limited and not recommended at all. There is NO PARKING at the ½ Marathon start.
Shuttles
Athletes participating in the full marathon should arrive at the Village start/finish area NO LATER THAN 6:00a.m. Shuttles will start taking athletes from parking to the start at 5:00a.m.
½ marathon athletes should arrive to the Division Dr. start line NO LATER THAN 7:00a.m. Shuttles will start transporting athletes around 6:00a.m. from the Snow Summit parking lot.
For family and friends, 5k runners, 1k kids race participants, and early finishers, a shuttle will run continuously between the Village start/finish area and parking. As the bulk of marathon and 1/2 marathon racers finish, more shuttles will be available to take these runners to their vehicles.
Last shuttle from the Village start/finish area will be 4:00p.m.

Volunteering
Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless.
~Sherry Anderson
Everyone should volunteer at a race. Athletes especially, so they get a sense of what goes into the events they enjoy so much. Really though, whether involved in the sport or not, volunteering is a great way to enjoy the energy of a race, help people who need it, and even meet new people.
The Big Bear Marathon will be run with the help of about 500 volunteers! It is simply amazing how many people it takes to manage 26+ miles of course, registration, an expo, and everything else that happens at a marathon. We still have several key positions unfilled, and your help will be greatly appreciated.
We take pride in taking good care of our volunteers. Our staff is very organized (thanks in large part to Cheryl and her captains!) so you’ll have clear instructions on what you and your group are responsible for. We send every volunteer to their station with a packed lunch and water, and you’ll also get a commemorative Big Bear Marathon t-shirt.
If you want to be a volunteer please email Cheryl Zwarkowski at our HBT Events office: volunteer@hbtevents.com. Thank you for giving your time to volunteer!
